Practice fit

Who this pack is for

Parents, teachers and homeschool educators helping a learner who can identify the current letters with support and wants to try a short word. Adults may read every model aloud. Optional label and sentence pages are for learners ready for those tasks, often in kindergarten; the audience label is not an age requirement.

Scope boundary

When to choose another pack

Not a first letter-formation lesson, assessed phonics or sight-word sequence, reading-comprehension activity or independent composition course. A child who wants only one word need not attempt the sentence.

Choose your next practice

3 complete sections, or one collection

Choose a task you want to try. Each download is a complete section, with its own models, practice space and check. You can repeat or skip any section; all pages are also available together.

Inside the PDF

A picture, a word, a place to write

Use a complete word model rather than asking the learner to guess a spelling. An adult can read it aloud first; writing is the task.

Look and trace

Each picture matches a complete word model. Trace the word once on a light model; repetition is optional.

Copy, then choose a Try

Copy into an empty ruled row. For the optional Try row, cover the word models, tracing row and any Copy writing with spare paper first.

Use a word in a small task

Optional drawing-label and modeled-sentence pages provide a place to use familiar writing. They are not a reading or independent sentence-building test.

Choose a page in the complete PDF

Print a single page or choose one word. The optional pages are not required to finish the pack.

How to practise with the pack

  1. 01

Choose one picture word the learner wants to write. An adult can name the picture and read the full word model.

  2. 02

Look at the letters together, then trace the light-gray word once. Return to a letter-formation model if a letter needs its own demonstration.

  3. 03

Copy the whole word into the empty Copy row, with the model visible.

  4. 04

If wanted, cover the complete word model, tracing row and any writing in the Copy row with spare paper, then write in the Try row. On the label page, cover the word bank and the Label row. Uncover and check only the letter order.

  5. 05

Choose another word another time, or use an optional label or modeled sentence page. Stop after a short attempt rather than filling every row.

Check letter height, baseline or word spaces

Compare the actual Delius models for dog, sun and My boat. Choose one visible feature, try a little and check together.

Self-check after one short session

  • Word pages: do the letters match the complete model in order?
  • Label page: does the label match the chosen model?
  • Sentence page: are there visible spaces between words?

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. 01

Expecting the child to read or spell independently before using the provided writing model.

  2. 02

Leaving a word model or your earlier Copy or Label writing visible during a covered-model Try.

  3. 03

Requiring both words and all rows in one sitting.

  4. 04

Treating the optional sentence as a preschool milestone or a phonics assessment.

Questions about this pack

Can I download just one section or the whole collection?

Yes. Each of the three sections is a complete six-page PDF, and the complete collection contains all 18 pages in one file. No account is required. Section choices do not have to be completed in order.

What changes between the picture-word sections?

Familiar picture words is the original eight-word set. Everyday picture words adds twelve different illustrated words. Labels, lists and messages uses familiar models in drawing labels, pretend lists, a boat sign and a short note.

Does my child have to read the words independently?

No. An adult may read and name every model. The task is tracing or copying visible letters, with an optional covered-model Try; this is not a reading test or complete phonics sequence.

Do we have to fill every row?

No. Choose one word and one row if that is enough. The Try, label and sentence activities are optional, and an adult can keep the model visible for a Copy instead.

Can I change the words and keep these pictures?

This is a fixed original PDF. The Print generator accepts your own text, but does not reproduce this picture atlas or page layout. It is a separate way to practise custom text.

Print on A4 at Actual Size or 100%, in portrait, without printer headers or footers. Use the full page rather than reducing several sheets onto one. All Trace, Copy, Label and Try rows use the same four guides. The dotted mean line follows the actual Delius lowercase height; the top-to-baseline space is 14 mm, with 6 mm below for descenders. These are ordinary font models without stroke arrows.
